Vista Alegre is the first porcelain factory founded in Portugal in 1824. It was the first enterprise dedicated to the manufacture of porcelain by its founder, José Ferreira Pinto Basto. Sr. Basto acquired the Vista Alegre Chapel along with surrounding properties and later built a factory dedicated to producing porcelain, glassware, and earthenware. A Royal License was issued and granted by King Joao VI in 1824, and within five years, the factory was to be recognized as a Royal Factory; honoured for its exquisite craftmanship, design, artistic accomplishment, and production.
By this century, Vista Alegre has grown, merged, and added to its group of companies to become the sixth largest “group” in the sector of tableware, china, crystal, decorative glass items servicing both the retail and distribution outlets, while at the same time maintaining many of the traditional production techniques in glass, crystal and porcelain manufacture. As a result of years of dedication to excellence, Vista Alegre has expanded while also becoming a major part of Portuguese heritage.
