There are original pencil marks where the artisan marked the hinge placement. The pieces are all present and there are no discernible striking faults however, upon closer inspection the tip (or "jewel") of the White Queen's crown appears to have broken, and one of the White Knights may have been reglued within the past five or six decades (see photos), yet nothing of any significance that detracts from the magnificence of the set. All pieces have green felt adhered on the bottom, and a couple of the pieces show minor fraying around the edges (see photos) that can easily be snipped. The board is slightly faded on the exterior in a normal fashion. Any wear on the board and the pieces is commensurate with their age and past usage. less

Offered is a circa. mid 1960s chess set made in Tarasca, Mexico consisting of a two-toned Pine wood game board on the surface of a hinged folding wood box that includes the 32 intricately carved playing pieces made of tinted, etched and lacquered Boxwood that have elaborate chiseled bone and resin marquetry affixed.
There is no maker's mark or label, however, Tarascan artisans in Central Mexico proliferated during the mid 20th Century making wood marquetry wares for tourism and export.
The King pieces are 6” inches tall, Queen 5 3/4”, Bishop 4 1/4”, Knight 3 7/8”, Rook 4 1/2” and pawns are 3 3/8”.
The board / box measures approximately 17 1/2” x 17 1/2” x 1 5/8” open, and 17 1/2" x 8 3/4" x 3 3/8" when closed. less
