He's a furniture mender, carrying his chairs that need legs replaced. A tatty figure, his hat and jacket are worn, he's a working man, not a fancy man.
She's a hardware woman, traveling selling metal wares. She too is a hard worker, her clothes are a bit worn and workaday.
Both are hand-painted with delicate shading. Both are marked on the side of the base and underneath.
