Two eighteenth century oil paintings. Spanish Colonial School - Peru, Oil on canvas with gold paint & ornate gold wooden frame, 18th Century. An exceptional example of Archangel Michael with an arquebus (long-barreled European firearm from 15-17th century) and an ornate, brightly colored angel playing the harp. A common, if devastating, contrast between the conquering Spanish idealized view of themselves wielding weapons and the hope of music and art from woman, possibly misappropriating the Pachamama, the venerated earth mother of the indigenous people of the Andes. An exceptional Cusco School set of paintings with gold highlights and elegant gold wood frames. Professionally conserved (cleaned only!) by Los Angeles specialist and relined on board.
Excellent examples of the painted angels of the Church of Calamarca in La Paz by The Masters of Calamarca. These are exquisite in their vibrant color amazing detail and real gold highlights. Truly remarkable artifacts from the Spanish Colonial School - where the first European influenced paintings were conceived and executed in the new world.

About the Cusco School:
Cusco school (also Cuzco School) was a group of European and indigenous painters active in Cuzco, Peru, from the 16th through the 18th century. The term refers not to an easily identifiable style from a single period of history but instead to the artists of multiple ethnicities who worked in various styles throughout the history of the Viceroyalty of Peru in and around Cuzco. less
