Original handmade Raanu tapestry from Finland. Unknown designer. Woven in 1960s, when Raanu weaving became fashionable all over Finland. Raanu originated as Sami folk art from Sami area in North Finland, where it has been woven since the 16th century. Colorful, light, striped Raanu is a showstopper! Traditionally hung as a wall decoration or used as a cover on a sofa or bed. The influence of Raanu is still strong in modern Scandinavian textile design.
Raanu brought brightness to small log houses where Sami people kept their reindeer. Sami people are the only indigenous people in Europe living near the Arctic Sea, in northern parts of Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia. Still today, they make their living from fishing and reindeer herding.
Wool.
Condition is excellent for the age. May have minor wear consistent with age, but no obvious holes or imperfections.
Has two pockets for a dowel to enable hanging on the wall from either end (dowel not included). less
