Gorgeous vienna bronze item made by famous manufactory bergman(n), circa 1922: there is a well-built figurine of a smith visible - it is attached to round flat bronze plinth which is fixed on marble base on which a bronze board with dedication is existing / following characters in german language can be read there: 'unserem lieben klassenvater herrn prof.ing. P.gneist in dankbarkeit gewidmet. Die maturanten von 1922-23' (= in gratitude for our highly esteemed form teacher professor and engineer p.gneist. The highschool graduates of 1922-23). The smith's figurine is of stunning liveliness (the details are amazingly sculptured): the muscular man holds a hammer supported by anvil / the figurine's right leg is resting on a gearwheel / additionally, the smith holds a small model of a steam engine in raised left hand: obviously this figurine symbolizes the power of engineering. Signature namgreb (bergman(n)'s firm sign, read from behind and occasionally used by bergman) is engraved at figurine's backside (area below) / the character 'b' enclosed into an urn-shaped cartouche (= sign of viennese bergmann manufactory) is visible there, too: both signatures are well legible. Bibliography about viennese bronzes: ernst hrabalek, vienna bronze (a viennese tradition in artistic perfection, munich 1991) measures: diameter of base: 8.3 cm (= 3.26 inches) total height: 26.0 cm (= 10.23 inches) - marble base included height of bronze figurine only: 21.0 cm (= 8.26 inches) made circa 1922. Detailed informations about viennese bergmann manufactory: franz xaver bergman (or franz xaver bergmann / 1861–1936) was the owner of a viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronze oriental, erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical, humorous objects d'art. Noted for his detailed and colorful work, and signing either a 'b' in an urn-shaped cartouche or 'nam greb' - 'bergman' in reverse. These marks were used to disguise his identity on erotic works. His father franz bergmann was a professional chaser from gablonz / bohemia who came to vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son franz xaver bergmann (1861 – 1936) inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his fathers workshop.
