This marvelous Pierre Queille Louis Philippe style soup or punch ladle is created in gorgeous 950 sterling silver with gilt overlay and niello inlay. The workmanship is exquisite with floral tendrils on the front upper handle, as well as the back handle and bowl. There is an intricately engraved background under the niello design. Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper and silver, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. It is added as a powder or past, then fired until it melts and flows into the engraved lines in the metal.
Pierre Queille was a French silversmith, in production from 1834-1846 at 70 Rue du Faubourg Montmartre, Paris France. The gorgeous style of Louis Philippe was in fashion during this time frame. The hallmarks are: Mineve guanteer mark, demonstrating 950 sterling and a lozenge with PQ and a hand pump in between. Measurements for this fabulous creation are; Length from end to end=10-1/2 inches, Handle length=7-1/2 inches, Handle width at widest=1-1/8 inches, Bowl diameter=3 inches, Weight=5.56 Troy ounces. This beautiful ladle has been well cared for, gently used and is in excellent antique condition. There are slight losses of the niello on base of the bowl and, light scratches and wear commensurate with age, polishing and use. It is the perfect addition to your dining service, particularly if you like the French influence. less
