Artist: Adrian Hill (1895-1977) Label verso: The Royal Institute Galleries,195 Piccadilly London W1 Medium: Oil Adrian Keith Graham Hill was born in Charlton, London. Educated at Dulwich College. He then went on to study at St.John''s Wood School of Art and then The Royal College of Art. During the first world war he was an official War Artist on the Western Front. On returning to civilian life he painted professionally whilst teaching at the Hornsey and Westminster schools of art. In 1938 whilst convalescing from tuberculosis, he passed the time away drawing objects from his hospital bed and discovered that the process aided his recovery. In 1939 "occupational therapy" was introduced at the hospital and Hill was invited to teach the other patients, he coined the phrase "Art therapy" in 1942. He discovered that the practise of Art seemed to help patients take their minds of their injuries or illness and ease their mental distress.Hill worked tirelessly to promote art therapy, eventually becoming president of the British Association of Art Therapists. His paintings and drawings now reside in many collections including the Imperial War Museum and the V&A in London. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
