Vintage hand-painted ashtray from the 1960's , the Hotel Excelsior hosted Hollywood celebrities and historical figures. A piece of Italian history for you to display in your home.
From the estate of the founder of the American Society of Interior Designers, this ashtray was part of a collection I purchased. Please see my other vintage ashtray/catchall listings (including another Hotel Excelsior Roma) in my Chairish shop of hers from high-end restaurants and hotels from all over the world.
"The legend of Rome. For more than a century, The Westin Excelsior Rome has constituted a crossroads of cultural and social encounters.
Its history begins in 1904 when the first architectural project was introduced to the Roman community. The hotel Excelsior was commissioned by the Baron Alphons von Pfyffer (1863-1920) from Switzerland and realized by the Italian architects Emil Vogt (1863-1936) and Otto Maraini (1863-1944). The Excelsior Rome opened on January 17, 1906.
Since than the hotel represented the meeting place of international celebrities, attracting well-known exponents of culture, art and society. Picasso, Apollinaire, De Chirico e Marinetti, represent just some of the great names and eclectic guests who used to meet and made the history of and around The Westin Excelsior, Rome.
During the 50’s and the 60’s, The Excelsior Rome continued to grow becoming the heart and soul of La Dolce Vita and the golden years of cinema, hosting a number of Hollywood celebrities such as: Paul Newman, Liza Minelli, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Joan Crawford, Orson Welles, Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra, Catherine Deneuve, Prince Ranieri and Princess Grace from Monaco, the Kennedys, Sean Connery, Joan Collins, Sylvester Stallone, The Rolling Stones, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Kevin Costner, Anastasia, The Cure, Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell, Condolezza Rice, the ratifiers of the European Constitution and many others.
Thanks to the appeal of the Hotel Excelsior, the hill on which Via Veneto finds itself saw the mush-rooming of cafés, bookshops and night clubs. Nowadays The Westin Excelsior Rome preserved its allure and it is still considered a meeting place for international diplomacy and jet set."
