This umbrella stand is made in the style of Dorothy Thorpe. There is no maker’s mark. Dorothy Thorpe was a trail blazing designer of glass objects and later, worked with acrylic materials. Lucite is actually the name created by the DuPont when the company invented lucite acrylic in 1931.
This modern lucite umbrella stand actually looks like a modern abstract sculpture. It is made of several coils of tubular shape lucite, with a cup at the bottom to collect rain water from wet umbrellas. Alternatively, this could be used to hold canes or walking sticks, or as a unique vase for long stemmed fresh flowers or artificial flowers.
Since the lucite is transparent or see-through, the umbrella stand would blend with any color decor or style. I don’t know who made this umbrella stand or the exact age of the piece, but it may have been produced in the 1960s.
The umbrella stand is approximately 24” high, approximately 7.25” across the top and approximately 11” across the bottom. It is in good preowned condition with some minor marks and scratches, consistent with age and use. Please refer to the pictures. less
