This beautiful marine painting is a 20th century oil painting that was most likely painted in New England. I believe that because there is a label on the back of the frame that states the name of "Acton Framers Gallery" with an address of Acton, MA.
Although one cannot always rely on a frame to indicate the provenance of a painting, there are several clues to it’s origin. The state of Massachusetts is the location of many late 19th and 20th century “Schools of Painting” such as Cape Cod, Cape May and other towns which were founded by well know artists from major cities whose works are now found in major museums in the USA . The term “art schools” is defined as not a building, but rather a location where many artists and students “loosely” gathered, where the artist-teachers would teach and the students would learn painting techniques in a Plein Air loose brush work in the Impressionist style of painting.
This painting exhibits the Plein Air painting style. The artist’s work reveals the Impressionist style of painting color by carefully observing the reflection of sunlight as it appears on the objects. The subject matter of the flora, and rock formations all appear to point to a Massachusetts origin.
The painting is signed in the lower left hand corner of the work. The signature is difficult to read, but with a magnifying glass one can see the capital letter "P." Other smaller letters follow in a stylized monogram design
The painter was very talented and he/she may have studied painting at one of the schools of painting I was attracted to this painting because it is a very beautiful, calming landscape that exhibits a Plein Air style. I also loved the beautiful composition which leads one’s eyes to move in an "S” shape journey through yellow grass to the “center of interest” of the painting which is the boat. There it rests within a deep green horizontal band of distant trees.
This painting would be suited to many locations; we had it hanging in our living room among other Plein Air paintings where it was quite comfortable. less
