American lighting manufacturing enjoyed a period of particular excellence for 50 or more years, from about 1890 to 1940; both design and construction were of the highest quality, with precision fittings, top grade materials (brass and copper among others), along with many brand-new design concepts. The Faries Manufacturing Company of Decatur, Illinois, produced innovative, adjustable electric lamps and fixtures for both industrial and residential use. Robert Faries founded the company in 1894. During the early 20th century, Faries lamps were used extensively in medical and dental offices.
This particular lamp exemplifies that high quality of design and construction mentioned. It’s comprised of a combination of brass, steel, and iron (there’s a heavy weight inside the base). This lamp is ideally situated on the desk, as there’s a reflector inside the shade which diffuses the light nicely and puts it right where you want it. By twisting the knurled nut on the back of the shade, the shade can easily be lifted and tilts for a bulb change.
The bold design speaks for itself! (The lamp is signed, by the way, on the flat area adjacent to the finial on top)
The patina, all original, is known as “English bronze” and as you can see, there’s some discoloration throughout. There are some other disruptions (minor scratches) on the base. I’ve cleaned and waxed the entire lamp, and rewired it as well, including employing rayon-covered (antique style) cord and installing an antique (new-old, never used) toggle switch.
Measurements: 17 ¾ inches high; the base is about 5 ¾ in diameter. The bottom of the shade is 12 inches above the desk surface, and the shade is about 11 inches in diameter. less
