The beautifully proportioned … more The tall elegant stand is a newer version of the heavily carved stands from the Victorian Age. The beautifully proportioned form remains the same, a marble inset on the hexagonal top with a beaded edge. The waisted apron is supported by connecting spandrels carved in five petal plum blossoms. The plum blossom motif continues as raised carving on the face of the elegant cabriole legs all the way down to the feet ending with a modified support. (This is a departure from the usual claw feet.) Cross stretchers with a large plum blossom add stability to the the stand. Made with the traditions of Chinese furniture, the piece is put together with different types of joinery with no need for nails. The material is rose wood and has a Chinese lacquer finish. The marble is one of the famous marbles from Yunnan province. Rosewood was the preferred furniture wood by furniture makers in the 20th century. It is a hardwood, known for its tight grain, and the supply was available.

The table/stand has a multi-function. It can be used to hold a plant, or a stand for a sculpture.

The plum blossom photo was taken in a recent trip to Kyoto, Japan in February. The plum blossom is one of the Three Friends of Winter, a hardy plant that is the first to bloom when there is still snow. It is highly regarded by Chinese scholars for its ability to withstand hardship. less
