A unique piece of scientific equipment, this antique cast iron scale would have been used in a Spanish pharmacy during … more A unique piece of scientific equipment, this antique cast iron scale would have been used in a Spanish pharmacy during the 1800’s. The main cast iron body of the scale retains it’s original patina, which consists of a wonderful, faded and oxidized red with areas of white. The design features a central cartouche with scrolled edges. In the center is an oval coat of arms topped by a foliate cup and flanked by scales and a caduceus, both of which are orientated at an angle. Although a caduceus is now known as a symbol for medicine, originally, it was associated with alchemy in Medieval Europe. The scale has two brass trays that have developed a verdigris patina (one is more significant than the other) that are supported by a pair of lions with curled leaf bodies. Our cast iron pharmacy scale would make a great accessory in a kitchen, bar area, or office. less
