The scene wrapped around the octagonal bowl is T & R Boote’s romantic architecture and landscape storytelling with two figures on a grand stairway to a tea house amid tall, flowing trees. The fluted pedestal as well as the rim are also wrapped with a beautiful floral print as well as the octagonal- shaped lid.

This SHAPOO pattern was first produced by T & R Boote and continued by Thomas Hughes. The name Shapoo is thought to be an anglicised version of Chapu, a town near Nanking in China.

The bowl is 5 1/4" diameter, 6 1⁄2” handle to handle and with the lid the pieces is 8 3/8” tall.

The bowl is backstamped “SHAPOO T&R-B” indicating it was made by T & R Boote, Burslem, England during the years between 1850-1860.

Excerpt by William James Furnival – 1904: “From time to time changes were made, and between the years 1850 and 1860 the manufacture of white earthenware (called white granite) was undertaken for the American market, the firm suffering very considerably, along with many others, during the American Civil War.”

By 1888 Boote had stopped manufacture of decorated ware and in the same year Hughes had expanded by purchasing the Longport Pottery from Davenport's. It is most likely that Hughes bought some of the transfer engravings (including Shapoo) from T & R Boote. less
