Marked, "Made In Italy TY". Signed indistinctly. Circa mid to late 19th century. Acquired from a Palm Beach Estate.

The original period of toleware production, globally, lasted from the late 18th century through the late 19th century. Specifically, Italian toleware is known for its gilt embellishment and often features flower motifs. Like all toleware, Italian pieces are created from tinplate metal. Chestnut urns such as this were fashionable in late 18th and early 19th Century. These urns were used for carrying the hot chestnuts from the hearth to the dining table. Usually made in a distinctive Neo-classical style, they were kept on the sideboard so that, when not in use, they formed an attractive addition to the furnishings of a dining room.
