- For its age and use in two restaurants this bench is in excellent condition; helpful that the bench has since … moreFor its age and use in two restaurants this bench is in excellent condition; helpful that the bench has since been in storage, unmoved for nearly 30 yrs. Rattan: shows expected scuff marks, scratches and the stain and lacquer has worn off in a couple of areas. Cane: The cane is also in excellent condition and mostly uniform with only very slight stretching in one area near the cushion. It shows a beautiful patina where some of the stain has worn off, which gives it a two-toned look. There is one tiny area of the cane backing that shows a little damage from the back side. Raw Hide: There are few joints of the frame where the raw hide straps have worn off, which can be easily restored. Cushion + upholstery: The upholstery (very likely naugahyde with a suede-like textured finish) has full coverage—absolutely no tears or separation at the seams. It is in OK condition—it has such a thick, “substantial” look to it that it’s possible it’s meant for exterior use. There is some discoloration and scuff marks but the polyurethane foam underneath looks uniform and in good condition. less

VINTAGE TROPI-CAL RATTAN + CANE HIGH BACK LOVESEAT BENCH in McGuire Hollywood Regency style
RARE - extensive online searches have not produced another bench even close to this one, especially with the elegant, tall back. This unique hand-made love seat/bench is designed in the mid-century style of McGuire coastal organic/natural furniture in the 50s or 60s by Tropi-Cal, which is now Fong Brothers.
This piece reminds me of McGuire's Belden line, which made a beautiful loveseat (see link below, listed at $3400)--but theirs did not have the elegant tall back or such a beautiful patina on the cane. I have seen two other chairs possibly of the same line as this bench, but extensive online searches have not produced another piece. It has a dark--almost black stained, substantially-sized rattan frame (1 3/4") with a honeycomb cane backing and leather rawhide laces wrapping the joint connections.
Tropi-cal (now Fong Brothers) produced the fabulous Danny Ho Fong and Miller Yee Fong rattan pieces. (sold for $20k + up). The characteristics of this bench design, which is more of an Indonesian, chinoiserie, coastal, Islander vibe and doesn't look like Fong's design lines so I can't attribute the piece to either Fong designer, but SURELY they at least sat on it at some point in time while they were at "the shop"... surely... Regardless, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
The provenance of this piece has its own unique story, nonetheless, as it was purchased from a local Bombay Bicycle Club restaurant when they renovated in the 80s and has been in storage with same owner since.
