Description: This wall hanging was made in the 20th century. It evokes the elegance of the early French Napoleanic 19th century … more This wall hanging was made in the 20th century. It evokes the elegance of the early French Napoleanic 19th century era. The theme of the wall hanging is the portraits of the French monarchical royalty, such as Empress Josephine Bonaparte and her counterparts.
The work is a refined depiction in fabric. The overall fabric used for the covering of the panel is French blue moire. The elevated octagonal panels are covered in an apricot colored fabric that is bordered with a lighter shade of apricot cording that culminates in a tassel. The portraits images have been impregnated on fabric as well, which is a rather surprising feature of this work. The top portrait may be an image of Empress Josephine; one may assume that by the crown that she wears. The other two portraits may be family related royalty, or other elegant symbols of the French aristocracy at that time. The oblong fabric portraits are encircled in bas-relief medallions. The designs or the medallions appears to be the French symbol of the "fleur de lis," or a derivative of that flower.
This exquisite wall hanging may be hung in any room in which a "French" theme is desired. We had this piece hung in a dining room which had French wall mouldings. less
