This beautiful vase features an atypical teardrop shape, and is made from golden amber honey yellow glass layered in clear glass, in the Sommerso technique. This technique was championed by Italian glass artist Flavio Poli, who is attributed as the designer of this particular piece.

Flavio Poli was a highly regarded glass artist, born in 1900 in Chioggia, Italy. He began working as a glass artist at the IVAM glass factory in 1929, and later joined the firm Barovier, Seguso, & Ferro in Murano in 1934. Within three years, he was made a partner and appointed Artistic Director of the company. Poli designed complex Murano Glass lighting installations alongside Archimede Seguso, and during the 1950s, he developed his signature style of 'submerged' glass, a technique made by overlapping different layers of glass, with diverse consistencies and colors.

Poli's series of hand-blown Sommerso glass pieces was awarded the prestigious Compasso d'Oro prize in 1954. Over the course of his career, he won numerous Grand Prix awards at the Milan Triennials, and his designs were also presented in various editions of Venice’s Biennale exhibition, as well as in the World Fair held in Brussels.
