This 3 seat upholstered settee is a product of the Hickory Chair Company and its collection of James River Historical Plantations Approved Reproductions. This artisanal high quality selection of furniture came into the prominent view of the design industry with the support of Jacqueline Kennedy and her campaign to reintroduce classic traditional furniture during her time as first lady of the U.S. This small sofa circa 1962 replicates an. English country three-seater sofa settee, originally created in the 1800s by Thomas Sheraton. One of the hallmarks of the Hickory Chair Furniture was the use of sophisticated signature upholstery and proprietary textiles like the striped moiré fabric used as on this one.which consists of fine embroidered silk damask in a pattern of ruddy satin stripes and columns of goldenrod and brown toned flowers surrounded by clusters of olive toned laurels. In addition, scrolling vines flanked by geometric contrasting borders as well as chasing larger stripes with unfettered off-white backgrounds. The entire rectangular settee is supported slightly tapered straight legs with 4 at the front mirrored by 4 at the rear. The 8 legs offer supreme support to the espresso stained mahogany frame. A single cushion seat pillow that is 3 inches thick fills the inside of the entire seat is 62" wide x 22" deep. the top of the settee has a slight Hepplewhite camel hump that slopes softly from the top center..

This high end reproduction settee is made to honor the Neoclassical and straightforward design of Thomas Sheraton made him a master of the later Georgian era. One characteristic of the style was the use of specific woods for certain rooms, often embellished with detailed marquetry or contrasting veneers. Furniture tended to be geometric in shape, and the straight legs slightly tapered. less
