the solution of the shell separated and upholstered from the padded part and made of plastic material defines the new standard of new generation seating and indeed transforms a technical element, to be hidden from view, into a highly expressive and characterizing element.
the seat with supporting shell is in printed polyester and fiberglass on which the cushions are fixed with a system of threaded pins. It updates the scheme of the barcelona chair by mies van der rohe.
interesting features are the rear cut of the shell which increases its resistance capacity and the spherical rubber feet which maximize elasticity and lighten the general appearance of the chair.
by means of original connecting bands it is possible to give the three seats the connotation of a sofa and to create a single body.
mario bellini (milan, february 1, 1935) is an italian designer.
he graduated in architecture in 1959 at the milan polytechnic where his professors were ernesto nathan rogers, gio ponti, and piero portaluppi, at the time dean of the faculty of architecture.
in the sixties he began his activity in the field of design, opening a professional studio. From 1961 to 1963 he was director of design at la rinascente, the famous and prestigious chain of department stores. From 1963 he held the position of chief design consultant at the olivetti company; among his most famous projects are the first personal computer in the world, namely the p101 (1965), the divisumma 18 and 28 calculators (1973) and the praxis 35 and praxis 45 typewriters (1981). From 1969 to 1971 he was president of the industrial design association and in 1978 he became a research and design consultant for the renault car manufacturer.
from 1986 to 1991 bellini was director of domus and from 1979 to 2019 he was a member of the scientific council of the design section for the milan triennale.
c&b italia s.p.a. Is an italian company founded in 1966 in novedrate, a manufacturer of furniture, furnishings and other objects for the home.
the c&b italia furniture company was born in 1966, with the name c&b italia, from the meeting of cesare cassina and piero ambrogio busnelli; the latter in 1973 will also buy the shares of cassina building what at the time was considered the most automated furniture factory in the world, as well as a sophisticated research and development laboratory. The intent to combine design and technology is clear from the architecture of the b&b italia headquarters in novedrate (como): a modern headquarters designed by renzo piano and richard rogers in 1972.
