DAUM LORRAIN

A beautiful French 1930 art deco chandelier in nickel plated solid brass or bronze holding a large bowl by Lorrain verrerie de belle étoile.
The pendant on offer holds a Lorrain signed bowl in clear frosted moulded-pressed glass. The bowl is represented in the old Lorrain catalog on page #10 as model #157. A wonderful heavy shade in thick glass. The chandelier is in good condition. I have re-nickeled and patinated the authentic fixture. And the lamp is rewired with an American standard socket. For European countries I will place a E27 one. The pendant has a drop of 60 cm (23-5/8") and a diameter of 40,4 cm (15,9 inches). The bowl has no chips or cracks. But as you can see on the last 4 pictures there is a molding irregularity. Besides the usual internal air bubbles a long curved line can be seen inside the glass. Thick pressed 1930 glassware often has such lines. They are no cracks but irregularities often due to the high tensions inside the glass during the cooling down process. It does not distract with the pendant in place.
On Lorrain: In 1926 the famous Daum glass manufacturers opened a new plant in the village of Croismare near Luneville. A year later it started a production of pressed glassware. The new company 'Les Verreries d'Art Lorrain" merged with the one Daum already owned in this village "Les verreries de belle étoile". For these plants the Daum company employed the well-known designer Pierre d'Avesn , who till that time worked for René Lalique, as its artistic director. d'Avesn stayed in office till the Lorrain branch closed down in 1934. Some prestigious Lorrain models were signed P.d'Avesn like the bowl of this lamp. After the bankruptcy of Lorrain d'Avesn became the director of the Hanots/Verlys glass manufactory of the Holophane company.
