The work is of houses probably in Berkeley … more A wonderful landscape oil on canvas painting by Gerald Collins Gleeson (1915-1986). The work is of houses probably in Berkeley California. It has a Berkeley address on the back of the painting. As was the style of the time the work borders on complete abstraction with just enough hints to allude to a landscape. Great Midcentury original painting.

Born: Providence, RI; Studied: Rhode Island School of Design, Mexico City College, California College of Arts and Crafts (Oakland); Member: Allied Artists of America. Gerald Gleeson grew up in Rhode Island and attended art school there in the late 1930s. After serving in World War II, he studied art with Jerry Farnsworth in Massachusetts and spent a year in Mexico before settling in Berkley, California.

His watercolors from the 1940s and 1950s depict city street scenes, wharfs and bridges in the Oakland area. In addition to painting and exhibiting on a regular basis, Gleeson taught painting and drawing in the Bay Area. less
