This original engraving is from an early 18th-century folio of the statues, fountains, vases and other ornaments found in the Versailles palace and surrounding gardens. Based on the work of the French engraver Simon Thomassin (1654-1733).
The Versailles statues represented a variety of subjects, including the elements. Shown in this print is a statue representing Water (l'Eau).
