This original engraving is from an early 18th-century folio of the statues, fountains, vases and other ornaments found in the Versailles palace and surrounding gardens. Based on the work of the French engraver Simon Thomassin (1654-1733).
The Versailles statues represented a variety of subjects, including Greek mythology. Shown in this print is Achelous, god of the most powerfully flowing river in Greece, and so was the chief of all the river gods.
