Craig French is a contemporary pop-Constructivist sculptor, whose brilliant, lyrical wall pieces have gained an international audience. Cast resins, acrylics, sheet metals, rare woods, and glass are laboriously cut, lathed, and polished into fanciful shapes - then joined and intertwined into arresting colour-texture combinations. French is in the line of the pioneering Russian Constructivists of the early 20th century who sought to elevate the abstract language of machine-age forms into art works of deep social and spiritual significance.
Craig French can go from gigantic outdoor installations to indoor wall sculptures like "Doubles", this wall sculpture, offers a clever combination of balanced forms, materials and processes. The interlaced pieces act as a metaphor for the complexity and interconnectedness of life. A mix of black glass rods, hammered copper dialoguing with patinated and brushed steel, and the unique delicacy of a pearly presence. The central part, a nacre circle, draws the viewer in and symbolises the infinite void and the absence of ego. Then, Two elongated forms intertwine, creating a sense of motion and unity within the piece. Despite its stillness, it appears to breathe, playing in perfect harmony and communicating with us through various accents and abstract dimensions. There is elegance reinforced by Craig's skilful way of interweaving the pieces.
