This Mukenga are used in ceremonies also worn at the initiation rites to symbolizes the supernatural being called Woot, who named the animals and other things of creation. Woot was believed to be the first human and the bringer of civilization.
The Kuba are sometimes known as the "Children of Woot". A man of high status in the dance society would perform ancient traditional dance steps while holding this figure
