Notes on the Piece:
My first job out of college was assisting an art consultant who put art in hospitals. A large part of that job was selecting calming paintings that would create an escape for patients already feeling anxious about receiving news from their doctor. This piece, “Mamun’s Waves,” was painted at a time when I had to be very narrowly focused on calming colors, confident brush strokes, and commercially appealing subject matter. It was painted at the same time as “The Lemons,” which was also heavily influenced by that daily search for calming neutrals.
Although this piece may look like an abstract composition of curved lines, “Mamun’s Waves” was painted from an enhanced photo, a precisely-measured sketch, and an under-painting of light projections I sampled from Lake George in April, 2021. The blues range from ultramarine, to prussian, to cerulean, while in the shadows are pure black for contrast. Peachy pinks, greens, purples, and golden yellows were added as final swirls that give your eyes something to search for in the blue.
The original work was commissioned for my mother’s long-time business partner, Uncle Mamun, who needed a large, oddly-shaped work of art to cover a very distracting circuit board taking up all the attention in his new office. As successful as I think the piece is, I originally decided not to scan or sell the work because I knew its unusual dimensions would cause the prints to be surprisingly more expensive than they normally would be. Although I am going to offer custom prints and framing options for this piece in the future, these seven limited-edition prints will be a more approachable shape and design for those looking to decorate.
All seven of the limited edition prints have been professionally scanned, printed, and placed into a frame with a descriptive notecard at the bottom. The back of each print will be signed and dated for people interested in authenticity practices. less
