Notes on the Piece:
My Mother’s Perspective, aka The Lake House, was painted from a photo I took inside my family’s lake house in April, while standing in my mother’s usual spot behind the counter. This unplanned, unmodified snapshot was taken from her height, at the crack of dawn, a little bit after she normally wakes up and gets on with her day.
Although the opaque mountainside and blue dawn is inherently cold and calm, the composition itself is warm, brown, and crowded. From her perspective, the lake seems so urgent yet behind everything else. The view of the dawn is obstructed by an umbrella, a screen door, a chair, a countertop, a recipe book, two empty bowls, and a wineglass. The inspiration for this painting is loosely inspired by my mother always telling me she would spend everyday of her life at Lake George — if there weren’t so many things in her way.
For me, this piece will always remind me of Easter-time 2021. It was pretty cold and we were listening to The Eagles a lot on the porch just behind the screen door. While my favorite part is the yellow ceramic dish and the pastel colors inside its openings, I’m proudest of the zigzag pattern you see in the transparent glass bowl in front of it. The sharp yellow and brown pattern may seem unnatural at first, but through painting I’ve learned that glass and light can make the most abstract patterns a visible reality.
This painting will be professionally scanned and printed so that small details in the glass are visible. less
