Original carborundum engraving on heavily textured paper by Serge Hélénon titled “L’Originel” 1989. Pencil signed lower right and numbered 73/95 lower left. Published by Vision Nouvelle Paris, France. Comes with original Certificate of Authenticity. Measures 24” x 29” overall framed and 16.5” x 21” within the matte. Condition is good for its age with no major damage however the print has shifted a little in the frame and it’s evident that it has yellowed most significantly around the matte. The frame is wood but not particularly good, so I would absolutely have it reframed. Please ask any and all questions prior to offer or purchase.
Serge Helenon (1934 - ) was born in Martinique and studied at the School of Applied Arts in Fort-de-France before progressing to The School of Decorative Arts in Nice. During the 1960s, Helenon exhibited his work at the same galleries as James Coignard, Henri Goetz and Max Papart, who collectively had many exhibitions on the French Riviera. In 1970, in collaboration with another West Indian artist , Louis Laouchez , he founded "The Negro Caribbean School” in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The ’Vôhou - Vôhou’ movement they helped to introduce became a decisive milestone in the development of Ivory Coast contemporary art. Helenon went on to teach in Senegal.
