On this plate, the background is white, there is a blue outline, with blue and red floral decorations. Imari porcelain is actually a Japanese porcelain production site on the island of Kyushu, in the province of Hizen. One of the different styles of Imari porcelain found there is the Kirande style, also known as "golden brocade". It can be recognised by the use of three specific colours (cobalt blue, saffron red and white) but also by a particular iconographic register (numerous floral motifs, animal and mineral elements). As Japan was a closed country for three centuries between the 17th and 19th centuries, and its Imari porcelain was highly prized, China adopted Imari motifs for European customers. less
