A nice early vase by Roger Guérin made around 1918-1920 in stoneware with a nice predominantly brown green and blue drip glaze. Guérin is a famous potter from the village of Bouffioulx near Charleroi Belgium. The vase is 16,6 cm (6,54 inches) high. It is in very good condition. And signed "R.Guérin grès Wallon" on the bottom. This signature with the R in the G was only used by Guérin when he just took over the pottery of Delsaux. Before Guérin used to sign with the "R in G" initials which can be found on some rare vases done in 1916 when he still worked for 'Escarboucle' the pottery of Willem Delsaux. In 1918 Guérin toke over from Delsaux. And in the early days Guérin made one-of-a-kind art pottery. Unique pieces. Where he slowly developed his own style. Around 1920 onwards Guérin hired more staff and began to make serials of vases. Standardized models and sizes like the 100 series. The vase on offer is a fine example of the extremely rare 1918- 1920 made vases.

From the early Middle Ages onwards, pottery was made in the villages of Bouffioulx and Châtelet near the outskirts of the city of Charleroi. Due to the industrialization in the 19th century the activity and skills languished. When at the turn of the 20th century the painter Willem Delsaux came to live in Bouffioulx he got intrigued by the old tradition of the place and he took up pottery. Delsaux hired the most talented sons of local potters. Amongst them Edgard Aubry and Roger Guérin. Where Aubry soon left. Started to work for himself and became the most important Belgian art potter of the first half of the 20th century. Roger Guérin married the daughter of Delsaux and took over the company in 1918 when Delsaux left Bouffioulx and took up painting again. Guérin, less talented as an artist as Aubry but with outstanding skills and a good sense for business turned the Delsaux workshop into a thriving company with over 40 employees. It is not the mass production like the ikea under the Belgian art deco pottery Charles Catteau. But in the 20s and 30s the vases of the 100 series were produced in high volumes. The good high-end Roger Guérin pieces are hard to get by these days. Almost all is stuck in collections or at antique dealers. And most of what we see on offer online are either common Roger Guérin vases or (more often) incorrectly described junk made by his son Jules Guérin: mainly vases from the 60s offered as prewar Roger Guérin ones.
