A French art deco art pottery vase in stoneware. Beautiful crystallizations in the blue glaze. This model pitcher (Pichet au pélican) has a height of 21,9 cm (8,62 inches). It is 14,4 cm (5,67") wide and 13 cm (5,12") deep. It is in excellent condition and signed G.Méténier.

In the early 20s Gilbert Méténier (1876-?) took over the stoneware factory of his father Louis Méténier (1844-1922) in the village of Gannat in the Auvergne in central France. Gilbert turned the place into a succesful art pottery studio. It’s said that during the 30s he employed a dozen workers. Famous for his bright blue glazes his ceramics were often refered to as the “bleus de Gannat”.
The company had a large shop in the nearby city of Vichy. And Metenier managed to get contracts with the large Parisian department stores such as le Printemps, le Bon Marché and la Samaritaine which opened the market to a chic metropolitan clentele.
In June 1940 when the German troops arrived Gilbert destroyed all his moulds and left Gannat.
