Beautiful & rare complementary collection of 4 Antique Historical etchings in matching frames by 4 different respected artists. 3 etchings signed in pencil.
1) Titled "Dinkelsbuhl House" by Louis Rosenberg (American, 1890–1983).
This Drypoint etching with a rich burr, was created and printed in 1928.
Pencil signed in the lower right. 12"w x 14"t.
Rosenberg studied architecture at the University of Oregon before moving into architectural etching, studying at the American Academy in Rome and the Royal College of Art in London. The majority of his work was of European buildings with historic significance.
Very fine condition, edition limited.
2) Titled "Misty Morning" by Winifred Austen (English, 1876-1964). An absolutely charming and beautiful quality signed 'Modern British' drypoint etching depicting American Wigeon on the wing, by perhaps the most renowned bird artist of the 20th century, Winifred Austin. Original pencil signed drypoint etching. 19"w x 16.25"t.
Winifred Maria Louise Austen (12 July 1876– 1 November 1964) was an English illustrator, painter, etcher and aquatint engraver, particularly known for her detailed depictions of small mammals and birds.
Very Fine condition, Edition Limited.
3) Titled "Coffee Boatmen" by Artist Philip Kappel (American, 1901-1981). Rare drypoint etching of Coffee Boatmen, Aux Cayes, Haiti, 1928. Signed in pencil. 16"w x 15.25"t.
Etcher and book illustrator Philip Kappel was born in Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He also studied with marine artist Philip Little in Salem, Massachusetts and was employed as an artist by several American steamship lines. He made six trips around the world on sailing vessels to gather themes, mainly maritime, for his etchings, which held by major American museums and the Biblotheque National in Paris His artwork constitutes s a record of the shipping industry in the United States at its peak. Kappel received many awards for his work.
4) Titled "Rocco de Pappo" by Artist Edward Bouverie Hoyton (British, 1900 - 1988). Etching in good condition. 17"w x 18"t.
Printmaker, watercolourist and teacher, born in London. He studied at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art, 1918–26, then at British School in Rome, 1926–8. He went on to become principal of Penzance School of Art, 1941–66. With his wife Inez Hoyton, the artist, he was a notable figure in Newlyn art circles and showed widely locally as well as at RA, RBA, and elsewhere in the provinces. Hoyton’s work covered a wide range, from early prints in the manner of Samuel Palmer and F L Maur Griggs – as illustrated in The Studio volume Artists’ Country, by C Geoffrey Holme and G S Sandilands – to abstract etchings of Tresco, in the Isles of Scilly, of the late 1940s. less
