Pearlstein used live models along with props from different vantage points to reference as he painted, while most artist would use a still picture or print to work from. Pearlstein is most known for his works focusing on the nude body and form, this print of "Ellen in Tutu, 1972" is unusual for the fact that the model is clothed and the model Ellen is Philip Pearlstein's daughter. This is a rare, low run edition of this print, No. 10/10 artist proofs.

Pearlstein avoided idealization in his work of the human form, he created still life-like images of the models as they were presented. Pearlstein painted the human form works of art for over 60 years. Pearlstein's model of over 18 years, Desiree Avarez, wrote: “He is fascinated with the beauty of form, and by beauty I mean power. This is a man studying structure and the math of its glamour as deeply as the ancient philosophers. As if understanding the essence of the endoskeleton might uncover the sublime.”
