This 19th century wabi-sabi dough bowl is obviously well used and a representation of a time-worn handcrafted art form of utilitarian ware from the past. There is age-appropriate wear from years of food preparation, such as the interior round circles, from dough balls that were left for rising (see all aerial photos), metal braces applied over the years on both sides to help keep the shape (see photos 7, 8); it does lie flat on a hard surface. less

Antique dough bowls feature gorgeous wood grain texture and subtle imperfections that speak to their humble histories. They were widely used in the 1800s and 1900s and were either hand carved from a solid tree trunk in one piece using scoops and chisels or constructed from separate rustic primitive timbers. This type of dough bowl was typically used by home bakers for small batches of bread and were passed down through the generations from mother to daughter. The dough was kneaded in the bowl then covered with cloth and left to rise. The rise would be an even one because the wood retained the heat created by the yeast. Since wood is an organic material, it shrinks across the grain with age and antique dough bowls will show signs of wear and in many cases repair, whether in the form of metal patches or strips of glue. This 19th century wabi-sabi dough bowl is obviously well used and a representation of a time-worn handcrafted art form of utilitarian ware from the past. It measures 20” wide (includes the handle); depth 16¼”; height on one side 3” while the other side is 2½”; weight 5 lbs. 14 oz.
