MAKER
Designer: Louis Henry Sullivan (American, 1856-1924) | Architect: George Grant Elmslie (Scottish-American, 1869-1952), Purcell and Elmslie (Chicago, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis, 1913-21)
PROVENANCE
Babson House (Riverside, Illinois, 1907-60). The Babson House was the home of the entrepreneur and horse breeder Henry B. Babson (1875-1970). Sullivan was a mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright, and an inspiration to the Chicago group of architects now known as the Prairie School. Although the concept of the Babson House comes from Sullivan, Elmslie did most of the major design as well as much of the interior and furnishings.
The house was demolished in 1960 but three of the original service buildings remained on the property and went on the market for sale in 2013.
