The upper part of the porcelain is decorated with a red frieze on the side. Many details are gilded.
Imari porcelain is actually a Japanese porcelain production site on the island of Kyushu, in the province of Hizen. One of the different styles of Imari porcelain found there is the Kirande style, also known as "gilt brocade". It is recognizable by the use of three specific colors (cobalt blue, saffron red and white) but also by a particular iconographic register (numerous floral motifs, animal and mineral elements). As Japan was a closed country for three centuries between the 17th and 19th centuries and its Imari porcelain was highly prized, China embraced Imari designs for European customers.
