1920s, Heinrich Von Zügel, Cows & Worker in Field, Oil on Board, Large Signed Painting. Mounted on original antique grape drying board from the Central Valley of California - sublimely aged and weathered through farm use. Beautiful rustic painting and mount.
Original Oil on Board from German artist Heinrich Johann Von Zugel (1850 - 1941). Palette knife technique has lovely color and texture. This original work is gracefully executed and remarkable in the muted lighting and inescapable puzzlement in the eyes of the bovine subjects. This piece may have been a copy from his studio or acolytes. There are many auction results for Von Zugel's oil paintings of farm animals in the $20,000-$30,000 range.
Size/Dimensions: Overall 24"wide x 2" deep x 36" high inches
Artwork 19.5" wide x 23" high inches
A 1909 edition of Studio Magazine declared that German artist Heinrich von Zügel (1850-1941) “stands among the greatest animal painters of our time.” His artistry is as great as many of the French impressionists like Cezanne, Manet, Pissarro, and Courbet. You'll find this to be a work of art that you and your friends can't stop engaging with. Its color palette, lighting, composition, and earthy realism are magical.
About the Artist:
Johann Heinrich Von Zugel (1850 - 1941) was active/lived in Germany, Netherlands. Heinrich von Zugel's drawing talents were discovered and encouraged as early as the 1860s while the artist was still at school. This enabled the young artist to join the Stuttgart Kunstakademie in 1867 and the Munich Akademie two years later, where he interacted with the animal painter Anton Braith and Gotthard Kuehl. He believed, however, that Karl von Piloty's ways of teaching were not particularly beneficial to his artistic development and decided, influenced by the school of Diez, to work independently.
At the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1883 he was awarded the great gold medal for his painting Schafwäsche (Sheep Washing). Important museums acquired works by the young artist already during the 1880s. less
