Black and white photograph done as a fine art digital limited edition print or "giclee" (Nash Editions) by singer, songwriter, musician, artist, activist, pioneer of digital imaging and photographer Graham William Nash (American/British, b. 1942). The portrait, titled "Susan - Waiting '78" signed lower left, is of his then pregnant wife, Susan Sennett. Artist's signature, edition number "13/25" and printing date (1989) lower right. Stamped, signed and dated with printing date "'89" on verso. Blemishes top right margin, covered by mat. Art has undergone conservation to white borders. Presented with off-white archival mat and backing. Image size, 15.38"H x 22.5"W; paper size, 22.38"H x 24.38"W.
Born in the coastal town of Blackpool, England and raised in Salford, near Manchester, Nash picked up a camera before a guitar; he was inspired by his father, an amateur photographer. Taking pictures of his family at age 11 proved life changing for Graham, who has said, "That was the first time I realized that I could see things differently." The guitar and further watershed moments came shortly after when, at age 13, he decided that music was his calling.
As a founding member of The Hollies, and Crosby, Stills & Nash - a band that has been called the "voice of a generation," Graham Nash has made his indelible mark as a music legend. Nash was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice; inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame twice and is a Grammy Award winner. In 2010, he was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). His company's original IRIS 3047 digital printer is now housed in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in recognition of his revolutionary accomplishments in the fine arts and digital printing world.
A collection of 150 photographs, shot between 1969 and 2003, can be seen in the book "Eye to Eye: Photographs by Graham Nash" (2004) published by Steidl. The book included images of family, famous friends, unknown subjects and abstract compositions. In 2010, 21st Editions published a monograph titled "Love, Graham Nash," released as a limited edition keepsake (80 copies). It includes facsimiles of his lyrics paired with signed photographs from the 1960s and 1970s by Graham Nash and printed by Nash Editions.
Shows of Nash's photographs include: "Sunlight on Silver" (1990) a show consisting of 35 celebrity portraits, 3 feet by 4 feet each done in editions of 50 prints, for Parco Stores in Tokyo; an exhibit at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego (2006) - titled "Eye to Eye" after the book; a show of 91 paintings, pastels, and artistically enhanced photographs at Ocean Galleries in Stone Harbor, NJ in 2012; and a recent show at the San Francisco Art Exchange.
Graham Nash released an autobiographical memoir, "Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life" in 2013.
Nash has said that what he aims to capture through his lens is, "everyday, ordinary surrealism - the decisive moment." Garrett White, editor of the book version of "Eye To Eye", perhaps put it best when, in his preface, he called the artist, "a man who is fundamentally tuned in to the world…Nash has been blessed with a powerful, elemental curiosity and love of life, a trait that has fared him very well." less
