When purchased the plates were described as a "Japanese style design".

Would look great displayed on a shelf as a set—or interspersed with brown accent plates. From the photos you can see how well the plates would show against dark wood.

The plates are marked on the back "Marx & Gutherz Carlsbad".

Marx & Gutherz was co-founded about 1876 by Maximilian Marx & Oscar Gutherz in Altrohlau, Bavaria (now Stara Role, Czech Republic). American importers from the New York firm Larzarus & Straus & Sons grew the company by financing the creation of a Marx & Gutherz factory in 1884. Most porcelain was produced between 1889 and 1918.
