Description: Glazed ceramic vase from the Bien-hoa school, decorated with six sages from the Taoist tradition. The handles are in the … more Glazed ceramic vase from the Bien-hoa school, decorated with six sages from the Taoist tradition. The handles are in the form of elephant heads glazed in black. The upper part of the vase is in brown enamel decorated with scrolls. The mark under the vase, "T S", is probably the artist's monogram. The Bien Hoa School of Applied Arts was founded in 1903, on the initiative of Georges Maspero, to train founders of art and especially potters and ceramists, based on an old local folk tradition. Thus, many French artists went to train there, the city of Bien-Hoa being then part of the French colonies, producing productions mixing Vietnamese, Chinese, Khmer and French aesthetics, first Art Nouveau then Art Deco. less
