The Temptation of Saint Anthony inspired by Jacques Callot. The engraving is almost identical to the one made by Jacques Callot. The details are a little less precise, but the main composition remains identical. It is inspired by the 3rd or 4th state of this engraving by Callot, visible by the number of rosettes in the coat of arms. The coat of arms is that of the Secretary of State of Louis XIII, Philippe Phélipeaux. The differences are in the details and the legend.
Presence of a freckle from the lower center to the right.
Jacques Callot was a 17th century draftsman and engraver from Lorraine. He is considered one of the masters of engraving. His engravings are characterized by great sharpness and deep inking. The scenes depicted are very abundant on rather small surfaces.
He began an apprenticeship in Rome in 1609. There he joined his friend Israel Henriet. There he met artists like Antonio Tempesta, an aquafortist. He entered the workshop of Philippe Thomassin, who taught him the technique of engraving with a burin.
At the end of 1611, he joined Florence and received the Medici protectorate. He produced 15 of the 29 plates entrusted to Antonio Tempesta, where he experimented with engraving. He then became the engraver of the festivities organized at the Uffizi Palace.
from 1621, he returned to Lorraine. He then published picturesque series based on his memories of Italy, the Bali and the Gobbi. He also produced a series called The Beggars. He also began work on a series of 490 plates constituting The Book of Saints, published after his death. During this period, he also produced a sequel entitled The Bohemians, as well as The Supplicants.
His main work remains a series of eighteen engravings entitled Les Misères et les malheurs de la guerre. This work deals with the devastation caused by the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
