Engraving by Louis de Surgis de Surugue after a painting by Jacques Dumont entitled Le Romain. It is part of a series of 16 engravings illustrating "Le Roman comique" by Scarron.
"Le Roman comique" by Scarron, published from 1651 to 1657, deals with the burlesque adventures of a troupe of comedians wandering in the north of France. The theme was taken up by the greatest illustrators of the 18th century such as Jean-Baptiste Oudry who had the first idea to engrave the subject. In 1727, Louis de Surgis de Surugue took up Oudry's idea and turned to Dumont, who provided him with two paintings, and to Pater, who produced a series of 14 paintings, now in Charlottenburg. The paintings by Dumont and Pater, engraved from 1729 to 1739, offer a free and modern vision of Scaron's work, less realistic than that of Oudry but closer to the refined tastes of the century.
