- An antique French match holder and striker dating from the early 1900s. It features a figurine of a small barking … more An antique French match holder and striker dating from the early 1900s. It features a figurine of a small barking dog next to a barrel for holding matches. Known in France as a pyrogene, it was used on bar counters and tabletops to strike safety matches for lighting pipes, cigars and cigarettes. The match holder has been cast from spelter metal decorated with a gilt bronze patina. There are no visible maker's mark or stamp. less
