About the work and author: A. Basic magnetic terms Martin Kersten 1. Preliminary remarks The development possibilities and the limits of the various processes and applications of magnetic storage technology for data processing, sound and image recording are largely determined by the magnetic properties of the available materials of the data carrier and the magnetic accessories for Input, output and deletion. This introductory overview is given as a key to understanding the most important basic magnetic terms in the following treatises on individual sub-areas of magnetic storage technology. Their importance for individual problems and techniques of magnetic storage is only briefly indicated, since the remaining sections of the book report on them in detail. In the German and foreign specialist literature there are already many original reports and books in which the magnetic-physical side of this storage technology is presented more or less thoroughly [e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4]. The following overview cannot make the study of such writings superfluous. However, it should give an introduction that is as clear as possible, which may facilitate a more in-depth study of the specialist literature.
Fritz Wilhelm Winckel (June 20, 1907 in Bregenz – August 13, 2000 in Goslar) was an Austro-German acoustician and one of the pioneers of electronic music.
From 1927 to 1932 Winckel studied telecommunications technology and acoustics at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg. He initially worked in the field of television technology. After 1932, together with Walther Nernst, he developed the Neo-Bechstein grand piano, an electro-mechanical musical instrument. From 1937 to 1945 he worked for the Siemens aircraft factory.
After 1945 he studied physics with István Szabó and worked in the field of experimental voice and language research, with a particular interest in the analysis of the human singing voice. In 1951 his habilitation thesis on acoustic structural analyzes of language and music was published. Since 1954 he has been in charge of the degree course for qualified sound engineers, which he initiated and was implemented in cooperation between the Technical University and the Hochschule für Musik. At the end of the 1950s, alongside Boris Blacher, he was one of the founders of the Working Group for Electronic Music, which was based in the Studio for Electronic Music he founded in 1953 at the Technical University. The spherical auditorium designed by Karlheinz Stockhausen for the 1969-70 Osaka World Expo was also developed here.
