This piece is very peculiar in the artist's production. Most of Jean Soyer's artworks feature a large flat background which balances the energy of the gestual foreground, but here the foreground is merged with the background — yet the vivid colors and contrasts provide real depth to the artwork. Furthermore, although an abstract painting, the color palette and the shapes make this artwork almost a figurative painting of magma in a volcano. less
