This bent handle basket was made in China long ago, and the artisan’s mastery is evident: the strong, flexible willow strips are skillfully intertwined into a delicate pattern. The wider bands of the handle add presence and strength to the intricate patterning represented in the weave. This particular example is further decorated with painted characters along the handle.
