Notes on the Piece:
The Painting In The Third Floor Window, aka The Lemons, is without question the piece I am asked about the most in conversation. This giant piece was painted on a small easel in the corner of my studio throughout a large portion of the NYC covid lockdown. The original painting was commissioned for my cousin, Lauren, whose favorite fruit in the entire world is lemons. She asked me to paint her a bright and beautiful statement piece to hang in her kitchen where, as a food producer, she spends a lot of her time. She asked for yellow, blue, and white, arranged with elegance, the art of cooking, and Capri, Italy, in mind.
After a bit of thought, I decided to go with a simple, still-life arrangement. The composition itself is made up of some antique, depression-era glassware I’ve been collecting, a bright blue plate I thrifted in 2017, a handful of fresh lemons, and a lemon rind I twisted around something for flirty character. I spent the greater portion of three hours unsuccessfully assembling and reassembling different arrangements, but it wasn’t until I went to bed and woke up the next morning that got this perfect, sunny shot.
It’s so named “The Painting In The Third Floor Window,” because neither of the large windows in my new studio had curtains when I painted it. I usually paint at night, usually under bright light, and I kept wondering if people walking the avenue below could see me painting through the window. Everyone knows that yellow is my favorite color, so painting with this much yellow was immensely joyous and necessary. It felt like a complete act of happiness at a time when everything felt so uncertain.
While the lemons are the focal point of the piece, the glass tends to be what stands out. The painting has been professionally scanned and printed so that details of the glass are visible. less
