Japanese bird and flower scroll, finely painted, colored inks on silk, mounted on paper in a blue and gray cloud pattern with silver speckled highlights. At the top, the kakeo is black and white braided silk cord, and the makio is black silk cord, with black jikusaki at the bottom. The ichimonji at the top and bottom of the image is a light and dark gold silk brocade in a cloud pattern. The image is 16.375" x 43.373". A fitted pine storage box is included.
The seal mark at the upper right: "Longevity and Health". With a poem at the top in gyosho style Kanji and Hiragana:
"The flowers are blooming along the shore, which adds a fragrance to our clothes on a sunny day.
The egret standing there alone is not scared of us at all, and it looks like a peaceful hermit isolated from the rest of the world."
Signed, "written by Yun Yang (the art name) Lao Ren (old man) at Qi Shi Er Ou Hall in the 1st lunar month of the Gui Chou Year (1913)"
With two seals, below left: "Yun Yang (the author's art name) and Kim Yun-sik's seal".
Inscribed in the lower right corner: "Shunnan Shoshi (note: Shunnan Shoshi"s real name was Mashizu Shoshi (1851-1916), a Japanese painter in Meiji-Taisho period) and seals: "Shoshi (the author's pseudo name)" and "Shunnan (the author's surname)"
Inscribed in ink on the back near top wood weight: "Egret by Japanese artist / Writing by Kim Yun Sik, ... given to Miss Wambold (?!) in 1904" (note - later Western hand written inscription with wrong year - should be 1914).
An egret wades in a shallow pool under overhanging, flowering peony branches. less
